Masterclass by Timothy Tymkovich: “Inside the U.S. Federal Courts: Case Studies from the Bench”

The masterclass will feature hands-on work with practical case studies drawn from Judge Tymkovich’s extensive judicial experience and grouped into key areas

On May 21, the Center for American Law in Ukraine invites you to a masterclass by Judge Timothy Tymkovich of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and the U.S. Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review (FISCR), titled “Inside the U.S. Federal Courts: How Judges Decide Cases (with Case Studies from the Bench).”

Date: May 21, 2026
Time: 5:00 PM (Kyiv time)
Duration: 3.5 hours
Format: Online (Zoom)

Language: English (simultaneous interpretation into Ukrainian will be provided).

The masterclass will feature hands-on work with practical case studies drawn from Judge Tymkovich’s extensive judicial experience and grouped into key areas, including:

  • corporate and commercial law
  • civil litigation
  • tort law
  • anti-corruption and public integrity matters
  • election-related cases

In addition to case analysis, participants will receive a concise yet substantive overview of the U.S. judicial system, including the federal courts.

"Hosting such a masterclass is particularly valuable for the Ukrainian legal community, given Judge Timothy Tymkovich’s Ukrainian heritage. It is not only an opportunity to learn about the practice of U.S. federal courts, but also an example of the successful professional achievements of the Ukrainian diaspora in the global legal arena," notes Taras Polianskyi, Director of the Center for American Law in Ukraine.

An important part of the masterclass will be an interactive Q&A session, where participants will be able to discuss topics of interest, including:

  • career opportunities in the U.S. legal and judicial fields
  • how judicial associations operate
  • practical aspects of judicial appointment and election processes

Event Structure

The masterclass will begin with an introductory session, including an introduction to the judge, the participants, and an overview of the format.

During the first session, participants will receive a general overview of the U.S. judicial system, followed by discussion of the first set of case studies and a guided discussion.

The second and third sessions will focus on additional groups of cases from the speaker’s judicial practice, allowing participants to explore various aspects of U.S. law in greater depth. Each session will include active discussion and an opportunity to ask questions.

The final part of the event will be devoted to a broader discussion of professional and institutional aspects of the U.S. legal system, including career paths of judges, prosecutors, and attorneys, the role of judicial associations, and the procedures for judicial appointment and election.

Participation in the masterclass is subject to prior registration and payment.

Registration: https://forms.gle/whvT2YMnav1axwVEA

Participation fee: UAH 2,500 (payment is due after registration confirmation)
